The Indian Academy of Neurology (IAN) is the umbrella body of all neurologists in India. The genesis of this super specialty association was laid in a meeting on 16th December 1991 where 40 to 50 Neurologists met at Manipal under the leadership of Dr. J S Chopra and decided to form this association. Since then, IAN has grown from strength to strength and today has a membership of around 3,000 neurologists from the length and breadth of the country. IAN is focussed on service to patients, teaching neurology to members, students and educating patients as well as pursuing academic excellence in the field of neurology.

IAN prides on the variety and number of initiatives for academic enhancement of Neurology and Medicine students across the country. Students can actively participate in these and utilise this platform to their benefit and growth.
With over 3000+ Neurologists on board, IAN is the platform for patients to consume most authentic knowledge about Neurology and related disorders. Regular patient education sessions are conducted and available on public platforms like YouTube and Facebook.
To make the Indian Academy of Neurology an “inclusive organization” where all members: young, mid-tier, and seniors are equally encouraged and given the opportunity to contribute to its growth and enhance its reputation as the apex neurological body of India, initiate patient-centric activities for the betterment of their lives; create developing-world-specific neurological care models (which are affordable and can be adopted by other developing countries) and engage with the Government through various advocacy programs that can ultimately result in better public health policy formulations for various neurological disorders. To enhance the capacities of the various subsections of IAN, to enhance the opportunities for IAN members to undergo training in neuroscience research and encourage the team science.

Secretary’s Note
Dear all,
Greetings from the Secretary’s desk.
IANCON 2023 is fast approaching and we are all very excited about it as much as the local
organising committee, so ably headed by Prof M. R. Manivannan, I welcome all of you to
the temple city of Madurai ( my hometown) to not only gain knowledge but also be amazed
by the cultural framework of Madurai, a place filled with people who have genuinely golden
hearts and warmth in their hospitality. When in Madurai, don’t forget to taste the local
cuisine ( Madurai is famous for its eateries and is for that reason called the ‘city that never
sleeps’) or to shop for some local specialties (such as the sungudi sarees and the Madurai
Jasmine).
IAN has been progressing by leaps and bounds thanks to the enthusiastic and innovative
President Dr Gagandeep Singh, who has also been instrumental in bringing out an excellent
programme for the IANCON 2023. This year, we will have the honor of hosting the WFN
President and Secretary too.
The elections for the executive committee of the IAN is going to happen in August 2023. We
look forward to active participation from our members. It’s very heartening to see that
there is so much eagerness and willingness to contribute to the IAN amongst our members.
The Academy is as always at your service and would look forward to all healthy criticisms
and suggestions about how it can be taken to further heights.
With best wishes and loads of goodwill for the exciting season ahead
Dr. U Meenakshisundaram
Secretary, Indian Academy of Neurology
